In accordance with the educational goals of the degree program envisaged in the SUA-CdS file, the aim of the course is to introduce methods, techniques and related computer science instruments for the analysis of experimental data coming from biological sciences.

ELEMENTS OF STATISTICS

The Statistics section is organized to enable students to study and analyze experimental results of mildly complex nature employing suitable statistical procedures and resorting to dedicated software.

ELEMENTS OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

It  provides the basic knowledge to use computer science applications as  Spreadsheet  (e.g. Excel, Calc,...) and  programming languages  for statistical computing and graphics (e.g. R programming language)

All lessons will be delivered in presence. Alternative online teaching (by streaming) may be introduced according to the University recommendations related to the status of the COVID-19 pandemic.

ELEMENTS OF STATISTICS

Lessons, lasting two hours each, will take place in person. They will be streamed via the teacher's Webex page exclusively for students who are seriously unable to attend lectures or if there are particular impediments.

The course entails lessons where the main statistical subjects are proposed in parallel with the learning of the corresponding capabilities of the software that has been introduced during the Computer Science module and with the analysis of real biological data. Four practice exercise lessons will be scheduled.

Attendance of lessons is not compulsory. Attendance to practice lessons is compulsory and the students will be required to follow at least 75% of them.

ELEMENTS OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

The course consists of 10 hours of lectures, and 19 hours of laboratory. Laboratory includes exclusively practical activities.

The slides presented during lectures are available to students as online materials.

Attendance of lessons is not mandatory, but highly recommended due to the necessity of learning and employing specific computer science instruments.

The exam consists of a written test taken in the computer room. Online registration is mandatory to take the exam. The exam is unified, hence it is not allowed to take the two parts separately. If the study plan includes only one out of the two parts, please contact the teachers and dedicated exam will be given.

Remote examinations may be introduced according to the University recommendations related to the status of the COVID-19 pandemic.
