Obiettivi formativi

The course will provide main theoretical and operating skills in the field of biomedical, industrial and environmental microbiology. In the laboratory section, students will acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of the most important methods useful in microbiological analysis.

Students will acquire skills regarding the most common procedures in a microbiological laboratory and theoretical knowledge.

Programma

The course will deepen different fields of applied microbiology. In detail: diagnostic methods (growth-dependent identification, immunoassays, nucleic acid methods). Pathogenic bacteria (general concepts, pathogenesis, diagnosis): in particular, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Clostridium, Bacillus, Brucella, Mycobacterium, Corynebacterium, Enterobacteria, Vibrio - Spirochaeta - Rickettsia - Neisseria - Chlamydia - Helicobacter - Campylobacter. Antimicrobial agents, mechanism of action and resistance phenomena: from the identification of new molecules to the application in clinical trials and resistance development (epidemiology, diffusion, acquired and natural resistances). Production of diagnostic and therapeutic tools: development of biosensors for biomedical applications. Industrial micro-organism products and products formation. Applications of Bacteria in the environmental field: usage in bioremediation processes." Old vaccine" approaches and new powerful strategies.
