Obiettivi formativi

Coerentemente con gli obiettivi formativi del Corso di Studio previsti dalla scheda SUA-CdS, il corso si prefigge di descrivere le metodologie, le tecniche ed i relativi strumenti informatici che permettono l'analisi di dati sperimentali.

MODULO ELEMENTI DI STATISTICA - L'insegnamento si prefigge di introdurre lo studente alle metodologie, alle tecniche ed ai relativi strumenti informatici che consentono l'analisi di dati sperimentali. Il modulo di Statistica permetterà allo studente di analizzare risultati sperimentali di natura non complessa utilizzando le tecniche statistiche adeguate e facendo uso di software dedicato.

MODULO ELEMENTI DI INFORMATICA -  Il modulo elementi di Informatica fornira' agli studenti le conoscenze di base per utilizzare  strumenti informatici quali foglio di calcolo (quali per esempio Excel e Calc) ed  ambienti di sviluppo specifici per l'analisi statistica dei dati (quale per esempio R).

In accordance with the educational goals of the degree program envisaged in the SUA-CdS file, the aim of the course is to introduce methods, techniques and related computer science instruments for the analysis of experimental data coming from biological sciences.

ELEMENTS OF STATITICS

The course aims at introducing the student to methods, techniques and related computer science instruments that allow to analyze experimental data from biological sciences. The Statistics section  is organized to enable students to study and analyze experimental results of mildly complex nature employing suitable statistical procedures and resorting to dedicated software.

ELEMENTS OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

It  provides the basic knowledge to use computer science applications as  Spreadsheet  (e.g. Excel, Calc,...) and  programming languages  for statistical computing and graphics (e.g. R programming language)

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

CONOSCENZA E CAPACITA' DI COMPRENSIONE - Al termine del corso lo studente dovrà dimostrare di:

1)  saper utilizzare le tecniche di analisi descrittiva e inferenziale di base utili alla comprensione dei fenomeni di volta in volta in esame:

2) avere acquisito una buona padronanza degli strumenti informatici quali fogli di calcolo o ambienti di sviluppo per l'analisi statistica dei dati.

CAPACITA' DI APPLICARE CONOSCENZA E COMPRENSIONE - Lo studente dovrà essere in grado di eseguire autonomamente le analisi statistiche richieste dal problema specifico trattato identificando e utilizzando lo strumento informatico più adatto.

AUTONOMIA DI GIUDIZIO - Lo studente dovrà stabilire quali metodologie informatiche e quali tecniche di analisi statistiche utilizzare in base ai dati disponibili per descrivere e interpretare i fenomeni in esame.

ABILITA' COMUNICATIVE - Lo studente saprà fornire una giustificazione delle scelte di elaborazione effettuate e una descrizione sintetica delle metodologie utilizzate e dei risultati ottenuti dall'analisi dei dati.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - Completing the course students will be able to:

1)      use suitable descriptive and inferential statistics techniques to describe and understand the phenomena being studied;

2)      manage suitable computer science instruments such as worksheet or dedicated software programs for statistical data analysis.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - Students will perform the statistical analyses required by the problem under study by selecting the most computationally and graphically suitable computer science support.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS - Students will decide which statistical techniques to use according to the available data sets to describe and understand the phenomena under consideration.

COMMUNICATION - The student will be able to justify the choices for the analysis to be performed and to give a synthetic description of the techniques employed and of the results obtained.

Modalità di insegnamento

MODULO ELEMENTI DI STATISTICA -

L’attività didattica frontale verrà svolta in modalità telematica; se possibile si cercherà di erogare una parte della didattica anche in presenza, dando priorità alle attività di esercitazioni. 

L'insegnamento prevede lezioni durante le quali l'apprendimento dei concetti base viene presentato in parallelo all'uso specifico del software introdotto nel modulo di Elementi di informatica e all'analisi di dati biologici reali. Il programma calendarizzato dell'insegnamento è scaricabile dal materiale didattico. Al termine di ognuna delle quattro sezioni del corsoi verranno svolte delle esercitazioni pratiche specifiche di uso del software in preparazione all'esame. Le date di tali lezioni verranno comunicate all'inizio del corso.

La frequanza alle lezioni è facoltativa, ma fortemente consigliata vista la necessità di apprendere l'utilizzo di software dedicato. La frequenza alle esercitazioni pratiche è obbligatoria; viene richiesta la partecipazione ad almeno il 75% di tali lezioni.

MODULO ELEMENTI DI INFORMATICA - L'insegnamento si articola in 10 ore di lezioni frontali e 18  ore di laboratorio. Il laboratorio prevede esclusivamente attività pratiche.

Le slide presentate a lezione sono fornite agli studenti nei materiali didattici online.

La frequanza alle lezioni e alle esercitazioni è facoltativa, ma fortemente consigliata vista la necessità di apprendere l'utilizzo di software dedicati.

 

ELEMENTS OF STATITICS

Teaching activities will be carried out electronically; if possibile, some tutorial lessons will be held in presence.

The course entails lessons where the main statistical subjects are proposed in parallel with the learning of the corresponding capabilities of the software that has been introduced during the Computer Science module and with the analysis of real biological data. The detailed program of the lessons will be available on the web site of the course. At the end of each one of the four sections of the program there will be practice exercise lessons in which the students will use the software to prepare for the final examination. The dates of these lessons will be communicated at the beginning of the course.

Attendance to lessons is not compulsory, but highly recommended due to the necessity of learning and employing specific computer science instruments. Attendance to practice lessons is compulsory and the students will be required to follow at least 75% of them.

ELEMENTS OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

The course consists of 10 hours of lectures, and 19 hours of laboratory. Laboratory  includes exclusively practical activities.

The slides presented during lectures are available to students as online materials.

Attendance to lessons is not mandatory, but highly recommended due to the necessity of learning and employing specific computer science instruments.

Modalità di verifica dell'apprendimento

L'apprendimento viene verificato tramite una prova scritta. E' suddiviso in due parti corrispondenti ai due moduli dell'insegnamento, a ognuna delle quali viene assegnato un voto. L'iscrizione online è obbligatoria per poter sostenere l'esame. L'esame costituisce una prova unica, quindi non è consentito sostenere separatamente i due moduli.

MODULO DI ELEMENTI DI STATISTICA - 

Modalita':  scritto. 

L'esame viene svolto in modalità informatizzata con una durata di 60 minuti. Verrà richiesto

- di rispondere a 3 domande multiple guidate relative all'analisi effettuata tramite il software su un set di dati fornito 

- di rispondere ad alcune brevi domande relative alla lettura di una tabella estratta da un articolo scientifico.

Verranno specificati i punteggi massimi conseguibili per ogni punto di ogni domanda. Il punteggio massimo attribuibile è 32 (30 e lode).

Simulazioni della prova d'esame sarannno fornite agli studenti durante il corso e tramite la pagina Moodle del corso.

MODULO ELEMENTI DI INFORMATICA - Modalita':  scritto L'esame richiederà anche un'esercitazione pratica sui fogli di calcolo o sugli ambienti  di sviluppo  per l'analisi statistica dei dati.

 ESAME SCRITTO:
- dieci domande a scelta multipla sugli argomenti del corso (5 opzioni possibili, con possibilità di 0-5 opzioni corrette);
- un esercitazione pratica sui fogli di calcolo o sull'ambienti  di sviluppo  per l'analisi statistica dei dati.

Il punteggio massimo ottenibile è 30 e lode.

VOTO GLOBALE - E' costituito dalla media pesata dei punteggi riportati per i due moduli. L'esame è considerato superato se il punteggio risultante è pari almeno a 18 e se nessuno dei punteggi dei singoli moduli è inferiore a 17.

In periodo di emergenza sanitaria Covid-19 l'esame si svolgerà tramite collegamento telematico sulla piattaforma Webex. Consisterà nello svolgimento di una prova con l'utilizzo della piattaforma Moodle quiz e richiederà l'impiego del software R. I dettagli tecnici sono forniti nella sezione Modalità di Esame della pagina Moodle dell'insegnamento.

 

The exam consists in a written test. It is composed of a distinct part for each module of the course; each one of them is assigned a single mark. It is not possible to pass only one part of the exam at a time. The online registration is mandatory to take the exam. The exam is unified, hence it is not allowed to take the two parts separately.

WRITTEN EXAMINATION:

This part lasts 60 minutes. It is required:

- to answer to 3 guided multiple questions concerning the analysis of a given data set through the software

- to answer to some quick questions about a table extracted from a scientifc paper.

The scores assigned to each point in all the questions will be explicitly specified.  The maximum possible score is 32 (30 cum laude).

Simulations of the exam will be proposed to the students during the lessons and through the Moodle page of the course.

-  ten multiple choice questions on course topics (4 options, with the possibility of 0-4 correct options);

The maximum possible score is 30 cum laude.

 

FINAL MARK
It is computed as the weighted mean of the marks obtained in the two parts of the course. The exam is passed if the total mark is at least 18 and none of the single marks is less than 17.

 

Due to the medical emergency arised from Covid-19 epidemic the exam will take place in remote connection through Webex Meeting platform. Students will be asked to answer to questions in a Moodle quiz that will require to use the software R. All details can be found in the directory Modalità di Esame of the course Moodle page.

Statistica descrittiva: Dati ed errori. Campionamento. Frequenze. Rappresentazione grafica dei dati. Misure di centralità, di dispersione e di posizione. Analisi esplorativa dei dati. Dati bivariati e tabelle. Esercitazione relativa.

Elementi di calcolo delle probabilità: Eventi e variabili casuali. Esempi di famiglie di distribuzioni. Media e varianza di variabili casuali.

Statistica inferenziale: Distribuzioni campionarie e stimatori. Stime con un campione: proporzione, media e varianza. Stime con due campioni: differenza tra proporzioni, differenza tra medie, rapporto tra varianze. 

Verifica di ipotesi: Concettii basilari. Test con un campione e con due campioni (media e differenza tra mede, varianza e rapporto di varianze, proporzione e differenza di proporzioni). Test per la verifica di normalità. Test per la bontà del fit e per l'indipendenza. Cenni ai test non parametrici. Esercitazione relativa.

Descriptive statistics: Data and errors. Sampling. Frequencies. Graphical representation of sample data. Centrality, dispersion and position indexes. Exploratory data analysis. Bivariate data and tables. Practice exercises.

Introduction to probability: Events and random variables. Examples of probability distributions. Mean and variance of random variables.

Inferential statistics: Sample distributions and estimators. Interval estimators.
